Nile Green

Religious Entrepreneurs? is in-depth conversation between Howard Burton and Nile Green who holds the Ibn Khaldn Endowed Chair in World History at UCLA and is an expert on Islamic history and religion in the world. He has traveled extensively in India, Turkey, Pakistan, China, Myanmar, Iran, Egypt, Yemen, Syria, Morocco and more to get a deep sense of the reality of situations on the ground.

The basis of this wide-ranging conversation is Nile Green’s book Terrains of Exchange which is not only an account of how the Christian missionary movement affected the development of Islam in the 19th and 20th centuries, but also offers a bold new paradigm for understanding the expansion of Islam in the modern world through the model of religious economy.

This conversation will soon be released in a carefully-edited video format. An enhanced book developed from the conversation is now available, while Nile Green is also featured in six short documentaries – all details are below.

Like many academics, I write more often for my peers than for my undergraduates. Through an impressively close reading of my work, Howard has stage-managed that shift of audience magnificently. He has that rare ability to communicate complex ideas digestibly and informally; and yet without dumbing down. I’m genuinely delighted with how Ideas Roadshow has maintained the integrity of my arguments and ideas.”  Nile Green
